When businesses ask for automation by name, n8n now comes up more often than Zapier. The requests that name n8n are about AI agents. The ones that name Zapier are about the stack it grew up connecting.
Ask a founder which automation tool their customers use and the answer comes fast: Zapier.
It is the tool that taught a generation of small businesses that their apps can talk to each other. Its logo sits on every integrations page. If you are building a product that has to plug into other tools, "works with Zapier" is the checkbox memory supplies.
Demand has moved the checkbox.
Right now, when businesses ask for automation by name, they name n8n more often than Zapier. Make, the third name in the space, comes up about once for every five Zapier mentions.
Automation tools named in live market demand.
The two names are asked for different work
Read what each request is about and the split is stark.
When a business names n8n, more than four requests in five involve AI. About half ask for an AI agent. More than half connect a language model.
When a business names Zapier, AI shows up less often. Agents appear in about one request in seven.
Zapier connects the tools a business already has. n8n is where it builds the one it is missing.
Requests that name one of the two tools and not the other.
The company each name keeps says the same thing. n8n arrives beside Supabase and OpenAI: a database and a model, the parts of an agent. Zapier arrives beside Make, HubSpot and Stripe, the marketing and payments stack it grew up connecting.
The market is choosing a place to build agents. The name it gives that place is n8n.
The lead is recent, and it holds
Zapier started ahead. Since then n8n has led or tied in every period, and it leads now.
Above 100, the market names n8n more often than Zapier.
The exits point the same way. Businesses ask to move off Zapier far more often than off n8n. When they say where they are going, they name n8n.
What to build if your product plugs into automation
If your integrations page says "works with Zapier" and stops there, it answers the question buyers used to ask.
Three things someone could start on today:
- An n8n node for your product. Buyers building agents in n8n want your data and your actions inside their workflow, one step from the model.
- Agent templates, not trigger templates. Ready n8n workflows that put an AI agent on top of the tools these buyers already name: Supabase for memory, OpenAI for the model, HubSpot for the customer record.
- A way off Zapier. A tool that reads a business's Zaps and rebuilds them as n8n workflows, for the businesses already asking to leave.
This holds outside automation too. Every "works with" line on your site was written for the tool the market named when you wrote it.
Check which name it gives today. Real demand data moves faster than an integrations page.
